The River

The Alumine river is one of the longest rivers fishable in Patagonia for its entire length. It flows out of the Alumine Lake for 100 miles until it joins with the Chimehuin river, at which point the merged rivers become the Rio Collon Cura.
The river cuts through the dry Patagonia steppe with rocky and willow lined shores, that often hold big trout.

The Fishing

Rainbow trout are more numerous then the brown trout and the average size increase as you move down stream. Their size is between 1 to 4 pounds but the possibility to catch a brown of more than 4 or 5 lbs are really high.

The fishing on the Alumine River is a combination of nymph and streamer fishing. In the openning of the season, the best option is a 6 or 7 weight rod for casting streamers on heavy tippet and maybe the occasional big dry fly. As water levels decrease in January, lighter tackle is more suitable.
Much of the dry fly fishing is sight fishing to sipping trout in back eddies and stillwaters. And lastly, if you hit it right, you will get into a small inchworm coming-out that the fish go nuts over. It's a fish literally every cast when the green-worms are on. Heavenly!!!
