San Huberto Lodge
The beginning of the lodge, dating of many years ago when the area was wilder and more inhospitable, the Olsen family began to provide lodging for travelers who needed a safe place to spend the night. But as time went by, it became the most distinguished fishing lodge in the area, offering first-class amenities, and more than 30 miles of private access to Malleo river and Huaca Mamuil spring creek, one of the most renowned fly fishing destinations in Patagonia.
The Lodge
The main asset to guests at San Huberto Lodge is the almost 20 mile stretch of the Malleo River and its tributary Huaca Mamuil, accessible only to San Huberto guests.

Hosteria San Huberto is one of the most traditional lodges in Patagonia, "All inclusive" style, with excellent food and service, 10 spacious rooms with private bathroom, living room with library and fire place, dining room, open bar with regional snacks and drinks, quiet and relaxing atmosphere, hot tub and internet service.
All meals are prepared with fresh or organically grown ingredients, most of them produced either on the farm itself or nearby. Don't miss their fried meat "empanadas" and "big asados" accompanied by an assortment of salads from the lodge’s exclusive organic vegetable garden.
Enjoy this classic fishing lodge where every detail has been thought to make you feel just like at your own place.
The River
The Malleo River certainly needs no introduction for dry fly angling. It produces some of the best and most consistent caddis, mayfly and midge hatches anywhere in the world. This medium sized river is the perfect size for the wading angler. Very seldom, with a little positioning, are there rising fish that can't be reached with a 20 to 30 foot cast.
The head waters of the Malleo lie in the Tromen Lake at Lanin National Park and it flows west until it enters the Aluminé River.
If you are from the US, we could compare the Malleo' size with some wadeable sections of the Madison, is a bit wider than the Upper Sacramento, and a bit smaller than the Deschutes.
The Malleo changes it's course from a freestone river to a variety of water, from fast runs through basalt canyons, long slow pools meandering through meadows, traditional freestone riffle and pools, and spring creek like runs, and the banks become shaded by willow trees. But the constant is the ability to wade this spectacular river in virtually all its course.
With its superior densest, most frequent and most predictable hatches throughout the season, it has the reputation for the finest dry fly river in all of Patagonia.

Dry Fly Action...
High water in November and December allows great rainbow fishing on the 6 private access miles of the Huaca Mamuil tributary. Tromen Lake also offers excellent dry fly fishing for 18-28 inch browns, rainbows and brook trout. At this time Stone flies dominate the environment. While caddis flies are also active in the Malleo, during mornings. Can occur occasional mid-day mayfly hatches will keep trout up on top, all day long.
Meanwhile in Malleo, Rainbow Trout are the predominant species and they're typically abundant to 16-inches with some fish into the 20-inch range, especially in the early season.
From mid December to mid February, while stone flies still can be found in the river, fabulous hatches of huge caddis rise above, mostly in the last 30 to 45 minutes of light, as well as last light emergence of huge yellow drakes (ephemera varia), making the river bright with aggressive trout. In February the caddis start to decline and smaller, while blond and tan mayflies become active.
Fly fishing specialists who have made themselves at home at San Huberto particularly recommend Adams and Parachute Adams, Royal Wolff, Elk Hair Caddis, and red, yellow and green Humpies. The emblematic nymphs are Pheasant Tail, Hare's Ear, Zug Bug and Bead Head Prince.
An angler can also expect several opportunities to catch trout up 20 - 21 inchs during a week's stay. On average over the years, an angler can reasonably expect chances at 15 to 30 trout per day.
