San Martin de los Andes have followed the steps of the nearby city of Bariloche. After its foundation late 1800's, begins a vigorous stage of wood logging, agricultural and cattle breeding activities, until the creation of Lanin National Park, which begins to transform such productive activities, leading them to a new city model, achieving to consolidate sovereignty in border areas through the presence of the State, embodied in public buildings, and transform the original colony, in the tourist destination as we know it today.




From the foundation of National Park, new roads were built effectively connecting San Martín de los Andes with the rest of Argentina. In the 1970s with the help of bank credits many tourism enterprises were established in San Martín, offering a wide range of cabins, hostelries and resorts of different categories.

The city, situated on the Lacar eastern lakeside is picturesque, of Alpine style, and with buildings with abundant wood and wide pavement streets resulting of an ordered outlining.
In winter the city gets covered by snow. This is an ideal frame for the practice of ski in the neighbouring Chapelco winter resort. In the other hand, in summer the activities are mostly carried out in contact with nature, some within the Lanín National Park, where you will find several possibilities: sport trout fishing, trekking, horse back riding, mountaineering, photographic safaris and more.
